To cap off the event was the ultimate music festival that kept the energy high with dancers, laser lights, chill out zones, and fireworks. The party came to a standstill for a short moment when all Music Runners froze in unison as they took on Manila’s biggest mannequin challenge. Shortly after Australian radio house DJ Sam Withers, who was a big hit in last year’s after-run concert, wowed audiences once more with a stunning performance.

“The Music Run™ is not just another fun run. It aims to bring our running experiences to new heights of excitement. Nike Introduces Breaking2 – The quest to break the two-hour marathon barrier.

su17_rn_breaking2_hero_group_2_native_1600

Today Nike unveils Breaking2, an innovation moonshot designed to unlock human potential.

Like all daring dreams, Breaking2 has an audacious goal: Enable a sub two-hour marathon time.

Many consider this feat impossible. It requires reducing the current men’s world record time of 2:02:57 by three percent. However, that challenge is exactly what drives Nike; the impossible is an opportunity to envision the future of sport.

To help achieve a sub two-hour marathon, Nike is working with a diverse team of leaders across several fields of science and sport with a holistic approach to athletes, product, training, nutrition and environment.

Breaking2 provides an opportunity to explore whether the impossible is within reach. It is the ultimate embodiment of Nike’s mission: To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete on the planet.

THE MISSION

In 1954, Sir Roger Bannister ran the first four-minute mile. Bannister didn’t just break a record; he redefined what athletes were capable of and inspired confidence in others to do the same.

This great story reminds us that inspiration — complete belief in an impossible goal — is at the core of human potential. After all, as Bill Bowerman, Nike’s co-founder and legendary track coach, once said, “The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race, it’s to test the limits of the human heart.”

At its core, Breaking2 is about more than a marathon.

Attempting to break the sub two-hour marathon challenges the perception of what is possible in sport, resets the expectations of product and enables Nike to gather incredible athlete insight. These lessons can be applied across everything Nike does, including products and services, to ultimately serve all runners. The only real failure would be to not attempt such an audacious goal.

THE ATHLETES

Reaching a sub two-hour marathon requires shaving seven seconds off each of the 26.2 miles of the marathon. Even for the world’s best runners this is a massive leap.

Nike spent significant time identifying three elite athletes who are perfectly equipped for (and bold enough to take on) the challenge.

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea are all lined up to attempt the impossible and run a sub two-hour marathon. These runners are not afraid of the unknown — they attack it.

kipchoge

ELIUD KIPCHOGE

Eliud Kipchoge, 32 years old, was born November 5 in Kapsisiywa, Nandi District and has won medals at both the Olympic and World level. Eliud began running after high school following years of observing his coach and mentor, Patrick Sang, who is still his coach to date.

In 2003, Eliud made his debut in distance running after setting a world junior record in the 5000 meters at the IAAF World Cross Country Championship. Later that year, Eliud became World Champion at the World Championships in Athletics. In 2012, Eliud set a half-marathon best with a time of 59:25.

Eliud won a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics in 5000 meters, a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 5000 meters and most recently, a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the men’s marathon.

He improved his personal best marathon time by 5 seconds after winning the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:04:00. In 2016, he improved upon that time even further when he set a new course record in the London Marathon achieving a winning time of 2:03:05.

tadese

ZERSENAY TADESE

Zersenay Tadese, 34 years old, was born February 8 in Adi Bana, Eritrea. His bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics made him the first ever Eritrea Olympic medalist. He was also Eritrea’s first athlete to win a World Championship event when he took the 20-kilometer title in the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships.

Zersenay has four consecutive victories in the World Half Marathon Championships from 2006-2009 and won the title again in 2012. He set a world record in the 2010 Lisbon Half Marathon and has won gold, silver and two bronze medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Zersenay is a four-time Olympian competing at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

In 2009, Zersenay became the second man to win three World Championship medals over three different surfaces in the same year. Zersenay currently holds the men’s half marathon world record with a time of 58:23. His brother, Kidane Tadese, is also a professional distance runner.

desisa

LELISA DESISA

Lelisa Desisa, 26 years old, was born January 14 in Shewa, Ethiopia. Early in his running career, Lelisa focused on road racing. He made his breakthrough in 2010 after running sub-60 minutes placing third at the Zayed International Half Marathon. He has won many high-profile races such as Boilermaker 15K, Cherry Blossom 10-miler, Bolder Boulder 10K and Delhi Half Marathon.

Lelisa made his marathon debut by running 2:04:45 hours in the 2013 Dubai Marathon. Lelisa won the 2013 Boston Marathon and with the event of the bombings, he gave his medal back to the city of Boston to honor all the bombing victims. In 2015, he won the Boston Marathon again with a time of 2:09:17, and took second in 2016.

Nike Meets Demands of all Athletes with Expanded Metcon Family

nike-meet-demands

Three years after the introduction of the original Nike Metcon trainer — known for its strength and providing stability — the Metcon franchise is expanding with the new Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit and Nike Metcon 3.

However, recognizing diversity in routines, the Metcon family’s extension delivers targeted solutions for a variety of needs.

On one hand, the all-new Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit is designed for athletes like Kyrie Irving, Skylar Diggins and others who balance strength drills and cardio. On the other, the Nike Metcon 3 supports the high intensity training of champion competitors like Mat Fraser and Sara Sigmundsdóttir.

To meet the demands of all athletes, the entire Metcon family shares some crucial characteristics:

  • Firm rubber and external heel counter for stability
  • Sticky rubber in the forefoot for traction
  • Outsole rope wrap for abrasion protection and rope climbs
  • Molded flex grooves in the forefoot for natural flexibility
  • Low-profile heel clip to minimize drag during wall exercises and handstand pushups

Ready for Murph?

murp

Run a mile then knock out 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 air squats; round out with another swift mile. That is “Murph,” in memory of Lieutenant Michael Murphy.

The new Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit is designed to cover the details of the demanding “Murph” circuit, debuting an ultra-durable Flyknit, which provides a lighter, more flexible one-to-one fit. It also has cushioning for the running and support for the plyometrics, as well as other cardio-focused routines like the “Helen” (a three-round cycle encompassing a 400-meter run, 21 kettleball swings and 12 pull-ups), Mat Fraser and Sara Sigmundsdóttir’s NTC “Row Down” workout and the NTC “The Big Four” workout.

Integrated Flywire and Flyknit at the mid-foot provide a dynamic fit that helps lock the foot in place for running, cutting, jumping and lifting. This, combined with a new dual density outsole, an elevated 6mm offset and a drop-in articulated cushioning system provide more cushioning and comfort for more miles and reps (i.e. crushing those WODs noted above).

Fran Anyone?

fran

Do 21 barbell thrusters followed by 21 pull-ups. Then do 15 barbell thrusters followed by 15 pull-ups. Finally, complete 9 barbell thrusters followed by 9 pull-ups. Do it all as fast as possible. That is “Fran.”’

Workouts like “Fran” and others incorporating burpees, rope climbs and squat cleans (including NTC‘s “Double Down” routine) require a shoe with a unique blend of durability and stability.

To that end, the Nike Metcon 3 is designed with a flat and strong platform, delivering stability for squats, box jumps and explosive lifts. The 4mm offset means it’s the lowest Metcon, which equates to more support for more weight under load. The new upper, made out of ballistic mesh and embroidered TPU, is more lightweight, flexible and breathable. It is designed to be firm enough in the heel to handle the rigors of lifting yet softer and more flexible in the forefoot to provide greater cushioning — allowing smooth sailing through the toughest power circuits.

The Nike Metcon 3 releases via NIKEiD on December 19, and inline from January 6 at nike.com. The Nike Metcon DSX Flyknit OG colorway is available January 2 at nike.com.

Under Armour Women’s Campaign culminates at Maximus.

uaxbdj-mama-kat

MANILA, Philippines – In an effort to strengthen women empowerment in our society through fitness and healthy lifestyle, Under Armour formed a partnership with Belle De Jour Power Planner and held an exclusive on-ground campaign dubbed as “Women in Armour” last Saturday, November 19 at Maximus Café in Pasig City.

The objective of Under Armour and Belle De Jour’s passion series was to encourage ladies to engage into a healthy and active lifestyle as many women are having difficulties in pinpointing the right exercise or continuing their daily workout routine due to busy work schedules.

As living a healthy lifestyle is a fundamental component to achieving an optimal mental and physical well-being, the event catered an intense circuit training and self-defense seminar.

The express circuit training was led by Under Armour-affiliate trainer “Mama” Kat Geronimo, a renowned celebrity fitness coach who mentors notable film and television actresses such as Marian Rivera, Danica Sotto-Pingris, Melissa Ricks, Megan Young, Bettina Carlos, Anne Curtis and Jessy Mendiola.

On the other hand, Filipina fighter Geli Bulaong supervised the mixed martial arts (MMA) self-defense seminar with 50 women attendees.

Bulaong, who made history last November 6 as she became the first-ever URCC women’s flyweight champion by defeating Yan Qui Han via first-round technical knockout, conducted basic MMA drills and several self-defense techniques.

Known as an advocate of women empowerment, Bulaong also shared that she donated her entire fight purse to the Philippine Cancer Society to signify her support in increasing awareness and reducing stigma of breast cancer.

Participants of the afternoon affair were in for a special treat as they were given an opportunity to interact and talk to the country’s high-profile fitness connoisseurs.

Meanwhile, Beast House’s Gia Gapay discussed about the amatory art of pole dancing as a beneficial form of exercise for women.

One Of A Kind Marketing chief Tin Majadillas spearheaded the commercial aspect of the event as she tackled about women entrepreneurship, while fitness trainer Andy Leuterio also shared his expertise on making recreational sports and hobby as a business.

The event culminated by unveiling the Under Armour corner at Maximus Athlete’s Shop Café, which is located along Pioneer Street in Pasig City.
