Da Nang Vietnam, August 6, 2017 – This year’s Da Nang International Marathon was successfully concluded this morning in Danang, Vietnam with six Filipino runners, representing Team 7-Eleven Philippines, taking podium spots in the full marathon and half-marathon races .

Lany Cardona of Pangasinan cruised through the 42km race to land as the champion of the women’s division, finishing the course in 03:27:26 while Rafael Pescos of Davao finished second in the men’s division with a finish time of 02:40:06. Richard Salano, a member of the Philippine Army secured the third spot in the podium of the 21km race with a finish time of 1:20:36 while the trio of Jho-An Banayag-Villarma (01:31:53), Nhe-Ann Barcena (01:37:08) and Ruffa Sorongon (01:37:38) swept the first, second and third spots of the 21km women’s category.

Meanwhile, Lizane Abella (4:20:19) and Azlan Pagay (3:02:06) took the Top 1 honors in their respective age group for the 42km and Kennechie Lorbes (1:49:10) took Top 5 for his Age Group in the 21km race.

“Masaya kami kasi ang 7-Eleven ay walang sawa na pinadadala kami sa ganitong international race.” said Lany Cardona who together with Rafael Pescos were given a slot to race in the Shonan International Marathon happening on December in Kanagawa, Japan with all expenses paid, as part of their prize for winning in the 42km category of this race.

Nine Filipino runners participated in this morning’s race, four of them in the full marathon while five in the half-marathon – a fulfillment of the commitment given by Philippine Seven Corporation (7-Eleven Philippines) to the top 3 (male and female) marathon and full marathon winners of the 7-Eleven Run that was held in the Filinvest City, Alabang last February.

According to Project Head Ms. Michelle Saludes, “We at 7-Eleven want to give Filipino runners not part of the Philippine Team the opportunity to showcase their abilities and be recognized in an international competition.”

Local and foreign participants coming from 50 countries, competed in the Da Nang International Marathon 2017 where the route brought the experience of running through Da Nang’s beautiful coastline passing the bridges across the poetic Han’s river in the middle of the city during sunrise.

This is the fifth year that 7-Eleven Philippines has brought Filipino runners to an international race giving them full support from taking care of all expenses, pocket money and with the help of sponsor Asics Tiger, a complete race suit.

“We will continue to encourage runners who aspire to represent the country in an international competition through the 7-Eleven Run Series which we are planning to expand by having another race in Cebu before the year ends and which will serve as a qualifying race to the 7-Eleven Run happening in Manila next year.” shared Mr. Jose Ang Jr., General Merchandise Division Head.

The participation of Filipino runners was made possible through the effort of Philippine Seven Corporation together with the support of sponsors Safeguard, Selecta Ice Cream, Pocari Sweat, Del Monte, Nature’s Spring, Summit Water, Dole Pineapple, Powerade, Solar Sports, CNN Philippines, Skyway, Filinvest and Asics.

National Geographic celebrates 8 years of environmental advocacy with Earth Day Run 2017

photo new

National Geographic Channel in partnership with Cherifer Premium and World Wildlife Fun for Nature (WFF), marks its eighth year of raising the public’s consciousness about environmental issues, social awareness through health and fitness by staging Earth Day Run 2017 this coming April 23 with a hashtag #8withEDR.  This year’s event aims to continue the tradition of being one of the biggest running events in the country, expecting scores of running enthusiast and Eco Warriors to register and run for the environment.  The event will be held not only in Manila but simultaneously in the cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Taichung.

Earth Day Run 2017 in Manila will be held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, where participants can join 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K categories. The event encourages and welcomes all types of Eco Warriors to take part, from fun-runners of all ages to the serious marathon runners who regularly compete. This year, Earth Day Run will also be sporting new features for its runners. As a special treat, all race kits will come with LED shoelaces, serving as a badge of pride and as a safety precaution for Eco Warriors running at night or before sunrise. Prizes will also be given to costumed runners who showcase their creativity by coming in their best ensemble made from recycled materials. Finally, to make each Eco Warrior’s voice heard in this run for the Earth, advocacy banners will be hanging above the finish line so that each runner can grab them as they cross to make a shout-out for the environment, keep as a souvenir, and use for all their post-run selfies to amplify the message of acting now to save the environment.

My 7-Eleven Run Adventure

From the successful Run 800 in 2013, suceeded by 3 more years of fun and eventful races that attracted more fitness enthusiasts, competitive and seasonal runners; another very succesful 7-Eleven Run was staged last Sunday, February 5, 2017, that invaded the Skyway and Filinvest City.

I regret to missed experiencing last year’s super fun Run 2016.  So this year, I make sure that I would not miss the fun.  Despite of enduring knee pain for the past few weeks, I decided to run the 21K category.

Race Day

Excited as I was, together with my blogger friend Rolly Pangilinan, we arrived early at the race venue.  The village was already open, some tents are already serving breakfast and I love the lugaw.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And off we go…

At 2am, the first wave of 21k runners was deployed.  Me, Marinelle and Rolly were at the tje last wave and were deployed at 2:30.  I ran with Marinelle doing easy pace as I’m being careful with my stride and taking care of my left injured knee.  For the first kilometer, me, Nhel and Rolly are running togrther but at the 4th kilometer I am running by myself.  Running alone makes me more keen on my pace and how’s my left knee doing.  Fortunately, the route was perfectly planned – hydration every 1.5 km with overflowing water, Pocari, Gatorade and bananas.  One big help for the runners are the marshalls situated every 2 kilometers (I think), offering liniment spray for those who need them.  Kudos to the organizer for that.  That’s a really big help to us.

At the last 6-km mark, I am feeling a little pain from my knee coming up at the side of my hips.  Luckily, I bumped into Nhel again.  I decided to do a run-walk system.  Gladly, I’m wearing my Nike Zonal Strength tight and Under Armour Charged Bandit running shoes, they really gave me proper support and comfort throughout the race.  I was already limping in the last kilometer but hey, I have to smile as there are photographers along the last 200 meters.  We crossed the finished line tired but happy.  What a well-planned race route.

At the event village

After we crossed the finish line and got our finisher’s loot bags, I look for Rolly and met some of my friends and we rome around the village.  The village is full of happy people despite of being tired from running, especially the 24K runners.  We are the happiest runners that day.  We swam on freebies – tumblers, biscuits, juice, donuts, ice cream, etc, etc, etc!

Top finishers won cash prizes and medals for the winners,  and also the chance to join an international marathon in Asia. But the the rest of the runners, including me, are all winners.  Winner to the max sa freebies!

I really had a blast despite of suffering ITBS.  I am so happy to see all my friends.

Thank you so much 7-Eleven Philippines for such a wonderful race.  You made all the runners happy.  Congratulations and more power.

Phillippine Marine Corps Marathon – “Katungkulan: Takbo Para sa mga Kawal”

logo

Want to run a challenging and breathtaking route?

Join the first ever Philippine Marine Corps Marathon that will be held on November 15, 2015 at the Marine Base Gregorio Lim, Ternate Cavite.

This activity is part of their 65th birthday celebration.  Proceed will go to the educational program of PMCOSAI (Philippine Marine Corps Spouses Association Incorporated).  The goal of the group was to help in the education of deserving dependents of  marines.

Another part of the proceeds will goes to the troops who are presently assigned in the Kalayaan Island Group.  The troops have least access to the mainland, no commercial transportation, limited communication; so it would mean a lot for them if we can make their Christmas special by bringing them goods in the spirit of Yuletide season.

My Run United Philippine Marathon 2015 Pacer Adventure

12080029_1004601839602419_3336091271915569903_o (2)

Run United Series placed a big part in my running career.  My first 21K was done at RUPM 2012.  My first 42K was also done at RUPM 2013, and last year I beat my own PR for doing a sub6.

An RUPM baby ever since

An RUPM baby ever since

I started running in December 2011 and all my first endeavors was with Run United.  In 2012, they conducted a running clinic which I joined as a beginner.  I learned a lot from that clinic.  I learned how to be strong not only physically but also mentally, proper nutrition, and proper preparation.

Run United Series gave me so much memories and for this year, I am paying it forward.  This year, I played not as a runner but as a pacer.

Run United 1 as 21K pacer

Run United 2 as 21K pacer

And last October 4 at Run United Philippine Marathon, I played as a 42K pacer at 6:30 pace group.  It’s not my first time to pace someone for a full marathon but this is my first time to be a part of a 42K pace group, not as a co-pacer but a lead pacer, and I only learned that few days before the race… hahaha.  I was so nervous then due to many things going on my mind.  I have been sick few weeks before the race and I lack ample time to sleep due to my graveyard shift work. Nonetheless, I already planned for everything; the pace time, the strategies and how to motivate and encourage runners to join our group.  I coordinated with Ate When, my co-pacer about our strategy.  My bag was ready, complete with my race day regimen.

IG post

On race day

As I planned, I woke up around 11:30 pm to get ready and reached the event place at exactly 1am which is the 42K runners’ call time.  I saw excited runners doing some stretching and some taking photos.  As we are preparing for the gun to start, some runners approached me, asked for groupie (showbiz lang ang peg) and others just gave a wave.

And off we go…

As we planned, we are running at 9mins/km pace.  We are one big barangay!, mostly consist of first time full marathoners and other who just want to enjoy the route.  Our group is so big and loud.  We are having a good time chitchatting.

The “kembot pace”

When we reached the Buendia route going to the Kalayaan flyover, I introduced to them the “kembot pace” where in you sway your hips a little bit making your foot roll, making some of your running muscle take a rest and other muscle group work, making you run longer and stronger.  This works great during uphill, giving less stress to the knees.  But take note, this only works for slower pace only as the heels tends to drop first, then rolling towards mid foot to toes.  Faster pace needs to be a midfoot drop for quick transition.

To continue…

Runners are enjoying the kembot pace especially when we are traversing the BGC route, which is a surprise for us to run along Bayani Road but it made easy by the “kembot pace”.  Upon traversing the Kalayaan flyover back to Buendia, I realized some of the runners are already tired; so when we reached the first 21-km mark along Buendia, I decided to do some stretching for a minute to loosen up tight muscles.  I led the stretching and many runners joined including runners that are not in our pace group.  As we travel along the Roxas Boulevard toward Luneta, we realized that the kilometer marker does not  jive with our GPS watch.  So, I told them that the next stretching break will be at the 30-km mark and after that, we will do Galloway technique at 8:30.  When we reached the Seaside Boulevard near One Esplanade, the runners are shouting “Whoooooo! ang aga pa natin” (around 6:20 hours) but when we turned right at the corner, we realized that we still have the last U-turn.  That last turn was hell for them.  It was hot, humid and they are so tired.  I understand them as so I am but I was amazed with the runner’s perseverance to keep up with their goal.  I saw them how they push themselves just to keep up with us.  I saw myself to them, at my first full marathon. I told them, “Laban!.. konti na lang!.. para sa unli-rice!”

We finished the race exhausted, tired and hungry but with happy heart.  But my heart was happier due to numerous gratitudes that I received.

My nutrition that day:

I’m the type of runner who is dropping the glucose level tremendously during the race.  That’s why I always bring energy gels during races especially in full marathons.  Before, I am using a certain power gel religiously.  Taking it every hour but the effect of it only last for 45 minutes so when I reached 1-hour mark, my energy was low and I was very hungry.  Not until Unilab Carbgel was introduced to me.  It is loaded with carbohydrates to boost your energy and last longer.    What I have observed is that, unlike my previous gel that only last for 45 minutes, when I reached my 1-hour mark, I’m not yet hungry but I just have to take one just to maintain my energy and it did.  CarbGel is available in 2 fruity flavors.  You can purchase them at Unilab Active Health site.
