Old Orchard Cranberry’s Tips on How to Take Care of your Kidneys

Kidneys are two bean-shaped multi-functional powerhouse organs of the urinary system. They expel waste from the body, balance body fluids, release hormones that regulate blood pressure, and control the production of red blood cells.

With all those jobs to be done, our kidneys deserve attention and care. The National Kidney and Transplant Institute has reported that Kidney Failure is the 7th leading cause of death among Filipinos and close to an estimate of 30,000-40,000 patients yearly undergo dialysis. Kidney disease often cannot be cured, but fortunately, it can be prevented early by taking care of our urinary tract. With the aid of Old Orchard’s resident US nutritionist, Amy Bragagnini, MS, RD, CSO, here are some tips that can help you prevent urinary tract and kidney infections.

  1. Eating Healthy and Exercising Regularly.

                Diabetes and high blood pressure cause most of the kidney problems. When blood pressure is high, blood vessels stretch to allow blood to flow more easily. The stretching eventually injures and weakens the blood vessels, impairing their ability to clean blood properly, including those in the kidneys. That’s why it is always best to follow healthy eating habits such as limiting intake of sodium (2,500 mg) and sugar, and controlling weight and blood pressure through exercise. Watchful eaters should also consider the addition of calcium-filled food (milk, yogurt, calcium fortified cereals, etc.) to their diet. However, Bragagnini notes that one must not mistake calcium supplements as an alternative to the natural food sources, as it could result to kidney stone formation when taken in excess.

  1. Giving up on Smoking.

If you’re smoking, you should quit now as smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. This results to an impairment to function properly which increases risks of kidney cancer by 50%.

  1. Following Directions for Over-the-Counter Medications.

                Your kidneys can only take so much. Overdoing your medications create high toxins level in the body, posing great burden on the kidneys. So as much as possible, limit yourself from too much chemical exposure. If you really need medications, consult with your physician and follow the instructions well.

  1. Having them Screened Regularly.

                If diabetes or high blood pressure is in the genes, it is always ideal for you to have your kidneys tested regularly as part of your routine check-up. A creatinine level higher than 1.2 for women and 1.4 for men is a sure sign of a kidney problem.

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

“Fluid intake is another important step to help lower risk of kidney stone formation and urinary tract infection”, stresses Bragagini. Healthy individuals who aren’t suffering present kidney diseases should consume enough water and other fluids of at least 2 liters of fluid per day. Consuming enough fluid helps dilute the urine and helps flush toxins. Bragagini prescribes that pairing a meal with Cranberry juice in moderation is a great way to reduce instances  of irritation in the urinary tract. In fact, Cranberries are power packed fruits that are rich in Vitamin C and a source of Flavonoid and Phytonutrient contents called Hippuric Acid and Proanthocyanidin. These power duo components prevent UTI-causing bacteria from sticking into the wall of the bladder and urinary tract preventing further damage to the kidneys.

Bragagini closes by saying that the most important thing you can do to keep your kidneys safe is to take care of your overall body to reduce your chances of developing diseases that put a strain on your kidneys. Coupled by prevention, it is also aided by continuously doing consultation with your physician or dietitian.

Adidas Women FitSquad Jump Sesh at UP Town Center


Last July 28, 2016, the Adidas Women FitSquad Philippines once again had their fitness workout done at the UP Town Center.  The workout was held after the unveiling of the newest Adidas store at the 3rd level of UP Town Center in Quezon City.  The store is the Philippines first ever HomeCourt store.  You can read more about the store unveiling here.

This month’s workout session was lead by extraordinary fitness designer and yoga teacher Nikki Torres.

The workout session was scheduled at 4pm.  Some FitSquad girls are early, including me and my friends, as we are there during the HomeCourt unveiling and to have an ample time to change into our Adidas workout gear and do some chitchats with the girls.

The workout is all about plyometrics, bodyweight, and cardio training and boy… it got my heart really pump up and I like it.  I drank 1 liter of water (thank you to my FRD friend Mary Ann for giving me her extra bottle of water) because I think I excreted 3 liter of sweat that day… hahaha

Breaking in the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit at the Nike Epic Run


Last July 16, 2016, I was invited to test the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit in a more longer distance – 10K at Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.  We arrived around 4pm in Nuvali Park and then there I readily change my shoe gear into Nike LunarEpic Flyknit.  So many runners are very excited to try the new running shoes, excited taking photos, and excited to run with them.

I told my blogger friend Dennis to join the 7:00 min/km pace group as I was sick 2 weeks ago and wasn’t able to run due to weakness, and I want to really feel the shoes.

I was right with my decision. as we are traversing the Nuvali Park, we were surprised to be directed to make a left turn, away from the main road.  OMG!  I was not informed! It was a trail run!.. hahaha…

It was my first time to run at the trails of Nuvali.  The route is not that challenging but we had hard time traversing it as it was a bit slippery as there as been some periodic rain showers at that time; but nonetheless, the view is amazingly beautiful.

With the whole NRC gang

My verdict

When I ran the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit first in a 5K run at NRC in BGC, I find the shoe lightweight and comfortable but a little bit bouncy which is good for me.  The uppers are soft and breathable.  It has enough ankle support.  The feeling is also the same when I ran for a 10-km trail route, though a bit slippery.  I think the sole was not made for trail running; moreover, it was conceptualized for a secure and a smooth ride along the road.   Nonetheless, my usual concerns in trying out new running shoes like – am I experiencing arch pain, heel pain or numbness in my 4th and 5th toes?  Happily, I didn’t feel anything off.  The Nike LunarEpic Flyknit jive with my feet, but I still have to try it in a longer distance as I usually join longer races.  I still have to test it under the rain; do they soak and feel heavy if they get wet and got blisters?  Do they still feel lightweight and cushiony at 32-km and above running?  Nonetheless, I enjoy running with them.  I will update you for my next running adventure with the new Nike Lunar Epic Flyknit running shoes.

AXA encourages Filipinos to #FailProof Your Health

Launches online quiz to measure health risk


AXA Philippines, one of the country’s largest and fastest growing life insurance companies, launched its latest campaign #FailProof Your Health, as part of its advocacy to create awareness on the prevention of lifestyle diseases or critical illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer, and protect oneself from its financial impact.

“Since we launched our first health campaign in 2014, there has been greater awareness in general for the need to live healthier lives and prepare financially for major health emergencies,” says Amor Balagtas, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer of AXA Philippines. “Now, we want to make health awareness more tangible for the common Filipino by developing this online quiz that gives them their Health Risk Score.”

“The quiz or calculator is absolutely free and can easily be accessed on our website (,” Balagtas explains. “While living a healthy lifestyle, such as eating properly or exercising regularly, lessens our risk of developing a critical illness, there are other factors that come into play that we have less control of, such as age, gender, heredity, and perhaps even external stress.”

“By knowing their Health Risk Score, we give Filipinos a chance to know their baseline health condition, so that they can find concrete ways to make themselves healthier and avoid suffering from heart attack, stroke, or cancer,” she said.

Health Partners

In the past few years, AXA has partnered with several private, government, and non-government organizations (NGO) to promote health prevention and protection. These include the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Cancer Society (PCS), Philippine Heart Association (PHA) Manila Doctors Hospital, and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

AXA has also been a strong supporter of Senate Bill 3016 (a.k.a the Samboy Lim bill) that requires mandatory Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for students before graduation. AXA also recently participated in a nationwide mass CPR training led by the Philippine Heart Association which was conducted simultaneously in over 50 sites around the country, with over 300,000 participants.

Moreover, the company has conducted hundreds of “AXA Health Day” sessions the past two years in various AXA, Metrobank, and PSBank branches nationwide. These sessions include free blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, as well as the measurement of Body Fat Percentage, Body Mass Index (BMI), and Waist-to-Hip (WHR) ratio, key health measures identified by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Supporting AXA’s health campaign are two social media personalities — James Deakin and Erika Flores-Reyes more popularly known to her followers as “RikiFlo.” Deakin is an award-winning multimedia motoring journalist, TV host, freelance writer, blogger, and columnist, who recently shared about his shock when he found out that his mother and tita were both diagnosed with cancer at the same time. As a show of support, Deakin, a known car enthusiast, had his car painted bright pink which he says “is the official color for breast cancer.” His post has since gone viral, and has helped create awareness for breast cancer screening. His car, which he has now fondly named “Pink Panther,” has gone the rounds around the metro with the names and signatures of hundreds of people written on the surface of the car, as a sign of support and solidarity against cancer.

On the other hand, Erika Reyes, better known by her stage name “Riki Flo” is a popular radio DJ, sports broadcaster, and event host who has been a strong advocate against cancer for several years. Riki Flo is a firm believer that healthy living is important, and that certain lifestyle shifts are needed to avoid contracting illnesses.

In its previous health campaign, AXA asked celebrity mom Camille Prats to share her personal experience dealing with throat cancer that claimed the life of her husband Anthony Linsangan who was only 31 years old, just a few years after their wedding.

New Health Products

Part of AXA’s health campaign is the introduction of new and innovative health products or health solutions in the market.

“We just recently launched three new products to boost our health offer in the market,” Balagtas adds. “We have Life Basix Plus and Axelerator Plus which are both all-in-one ‘investment-health-and-life insurance’ product bundles. We also introduced Global Health Access, a worldwide comprehensive health coverage plan, which allows consumers to avail the best healthcare anywhere in the Philippines or abroad.”

The three new products add to the extensive health portfolio of AXA Philippines, which include Health Max, Health Exentials, and SME Employee Protexion, all of which were launched successfully in 2014.

“With our current mix of health solutions, we ensure that we have a product or solution that is right for you,” concludes Balagtas. “We want every Filipino to not only live a healthier lifestyle, but to also get the proper health coverage. After the program, we are given a chance to experience a fun spinning at the Ride Revolution.  It’s not my first time at the Ride Revolution, so I know what to expect… Spinning in cleated shoes in disco-lighted room with specific and personalized club playlist created by the instructor.  The ride was exhausting but I really enjoyed the 30-minute session (“Bitin”, I wish it was longer).
