Old Orchard Cranberry’s Tips on How to Take Care of your Kidneys

logo

Old Orchard Cranberry Healthy Balance

Kidneys are two bean-shaped multi-functional powerhouse organs of the urinary system. They expel waste from the body, balance body fluids, release hormones that regulate blood pressure, and control the production of red blood cells.

With all those jobs to be done, our kidneys deserve attention and care. The National Kidney and Transplant Institute has reported that Kidney Failure is the 7th leading cause of death among Filipinos and close to an estimate of 30,000-40,000 patients yearly undergo dialysis. Kidney disease often cannot be cured, but fortunately, it can be prevented early by taking care of our urinary tract. With the aid of Old Orchard’s resident US nutritionist, Amy Bragagnini, MS, RD, CSO, here are some tips that can help you prevent urinary tract and kidney infections.

  1. Eating Healthy and Exercising Regularly.

Diabetes and high blood pressure cause most of the kidney problems. When blood pressure is high, blood vessels stretch to allow blood to flow more easily. The stretching eventually injures and weakens the blood vessels, impairing their ability to clean blood properly, including those in the kidneys. That’s why it is always best to follow healthy eating habits such as limiting intake of sodium (2,500 mg) and sugar, and controlling weight and blood pressure through exercise. Watchful eaters should also consider the addition of calcium-filled food (milk, yogurt, calcium fortified cereals, etc.) to their diet. However, Bragagnini notes that one must not mistake calcium supplements as an alternative to the natural food sources, as it could result to kidney stone formation when taken in excess.

  1. Giving up on Smoking.

If you’re smoking, you should quit now as smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. This results to an impairment to function properly which increases risks of kidney cancer by 50%.

  1. Following Directions for Over-the-Counter Medications.

Your kidneys can only take so much. Overdoing your medications create high toxins level in the body, posing great burden on the kidneys. So as much as possible, limit yourself from too much chemical exposure. If you really need medications, consult with your physician and follow the instructions well.

  1. Having them Screened Regularly.

If diabetes or high blood pressure is in the genes, it is always ideal for you to have your kidneys tested regularly as part of your routine check-up. A creatinine level higher than 1.2 for women and 1.4 for men is a sure sign of a kidney problem.

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

“Fluid intake is another important step to help lower risk of kidney stone formation and urinary tract infection”, stresses Bragagini. Healthy individuals who aren’t suffering present kidney diseases should consume enough water and other fluids of at least 2 liters of fluid per day. Consuming enough fluid helps dilute the urine and helps flush toxins. Bragagini prescribes that pairing a meal with Cranberry juice in moderation is a great way to reduce instances  of irritation in the urinary tract. In fact, Cranberries are power packed fruits that are rich in Vitamin C and a source of Flavonoid and Phytonutrient contents called Hippuric Acid and Proanthocyanidin. These power duo components prevent UTI-causing bacteria from sticking into the wall of the bladder and urinary tract preventing further damage to the kidneys.

Bragagini closes by saying that the most important thing you can do to keep your kidneys safe is to take care of your overall body to reduce your chances of developing diseases that put a strain on your kidneys. Coupled by prevention, it is also aided by continuously doing consultation with your physician or dietitian.

Old Orchard can be enjoyed in three flavors: Cranberry, Apple Cranberry, and Cranberry Raspberry. There are also diabetic-friendly variants that contain 75 percent less sugar and only has 20 calories: Healthy Balance Cranberry and Healthy Balance Apple Cranberry. Up the Tempo and Get That Groove In

Certified Zumba Mom Instructor Regine Tolentino

Some women think that fitness only involves rigorous gym routines and they’ll only lose weight if they feel that their muscles are sore. That is untrue. There are many ways of staying fit and no matter that your routine is, it’s better if you put music in it.

Dancing is a surefire way of shaking excess calories and gain friends. Apart from ensuring a well-balanced meal, Jeunesse Anion campaigns for staying fit through active lifestyle, just like what multi-awarded celebrity host and performer Regine Tolentino does. It’s as if she never runs out of energy.

She’s the country’s “Dance Diva,” and a strong influencer in the dance fitness industry who proves that dancing is one of the best ways to recharge our batteries. Regine is a licensed Zumba® and U-Jam® Fitness instructor, and certified by the AFAA (Athletic and Fitness Association of America).

Apart from hosting, Regine is also an actress, designer, entrepreneur and a mother to two adorable children while a host for several TV shows where she teaches dance and promotes healthy lifestyle change. If you’re wondering how she does all these without getting tired, it’s simple – she just loves looking beautiful, feeling healthy, and staying fit. Dancing is Regine’s way of keeping that tip-top shape!

Exercising to music like doing Zumba has loads of physical and mental benefits including improved condition of heart and lungs, increased muscular strength and tone, while reduces risks of osteoporosis and heart attack. Attending Zumba classes not only develops healthier body, it also helps moms become socially active, increasing emotional power. Much more, we love its mood-boosting benefits as it favors the release of endorphins that helps us melt not only fats but also PMS symptoms like moodiness.

Guilt-Free and Easy Peasy One-Pan Meals

 Chef Mom Instructor Len Santos-Ding

With the rise of technology, people have grown more pre-occupied of so many modern things, forgetting the basic and most important of all — healthy but good food. Because we’re too busy and have less time to stay in the kitchen, we’ve grown so accustomed of eating fast or fried food. Len Santos-Ding, our mom chef instructor believes that deliciously healthy food doesn’t have to be boring by incorporating real and whole food on the family’s dining table that’s not hard to prepare at all.

Len started catering when she was 19 while taking up BS HRA in UP Diliman.  She enhanced her food knowledge and skills, and finished a two-year culinary program at CCA Manila. From then on, she continued to promote nutritious meals but not intimidating. Her love for nourishing food has shaped her lifestyle and it’s the same motivation that drives her to efficiently manage their family catering business Feed 5000. Len also teaches at Heny Sison Culinary School, contributes recipes to Yummy magazine, and holds cooking and baking workshops in Feed 5000 Kitchen Studio at Ayala Alabang Village.

On top of her many jobs, Len is a super mom and like many others, she only wants the best for her family and loved ones. She prepares foods that are high in nutritive value, infused with antioxidants and good fats. “If your body is not starved for nutrition, it doesn’t crave junk food,” adds Len.

“Preparing healthy meals start from grocery shopping. Choose food that is real and fresh but just as satisfying. It should give you energy throughout the day,” she added. Len’s tip: Choose easy to prepare recipes so you don’t get discouraged halfway through and opt for fast food.

Jeunesse Anion understands that moms have a plateful of things to do both at home and at work but busy is not an excuse. Besides, we think that being at our absolute best self is the ultimate gift we can give to our family. And when during that special time of the month comes, make sure you’re armed with Jeunesse Anion sanitary napkin and liner that helps to eliminate bacteria, odor, and relieve menstrual discomforts such as cramps and dysmenorrhea.   Since it’s also the first anion sanitary napkin available in the retail market with quick absorbing top sheet and breathable material made of virgin pulp cotton, there’s actually no excuse to feel crappy about exercise and preparing your own meals. Much more, its non-liniment material helps fight vaginal infections or irritations that’s guaranteed safe for pregnant and new moms.

Breaking in the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit at the Nike Epic Run

img_20160716_163609.jpg

Last July 16, 2016, I was invited to test the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit in a more longer distance – 10K at Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.  We arrived around 4pm in Nuvali Park and then there I readily change my shoe gear into Nike LunarEpic Flyknit.  So many runners are very excited to try the new running shoes, excited taking photos, and excited to run with them.

And off we go

I told my blogger friend Dennis to join the 7:00 min/km pace group as I was sick 2 weeks ago and wasn’t able to run due to weakness, and I want to really feel the shoes.

I was right with my decision. as we are traversing the Nuvali Park, we were surprised to be directed to make a left turn, away from the main road.  OMG!  I was not informed! It was a trail run!.. hahaha…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It was my first time to run at the trails of Nuvali.  The route is not that challenging but we had hard time traversing it as it was a bit slippery as there as been some periodic rain showers at that time; but nonetheless, the view is amazingly beautiful.

loving these photos, thank you Nike

With the whole NRC gang

My verdict

When I ran the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit first in a 5K run at NRC in BGC, I find the shoe lightweight and comfortable but a little bit bouncy which is good for me.  The uppers are soft and breathable.  It has enough ankle support.  The feeling is also the same when I ran for a 10-km trail route, though a bit slippery.  I think the sole was not made for trail running; moreover, it was conceptualized for a secure and a smooth ride along the road.   Nonetheless, my usual concerns in trying out new running shoes like – am I experiencing arch pain, heel pain or numbness in my 4th and 5th toes?  Happily, I didn’t feel anything off.  The Nike LunarEpic Flyknit jive with my feet, but I still have to try it in a longer distance as I usually join longer races.  I still have to test it under the rain; do they soak and feel heavy if they get wet and got blisters?  Do they still feel lightweight and cushiony at 32-km and above running?  Nonetheless, I enjoy running with them.  I will update you for my next running adventure with the new Nike Lunar Epic Flyknit running shoes.

AXA encourages Filipinos to #FailProof Your Health

Launches online quiz to measure health risk

AXA Philippines, one of the country’s largest and fastest growing life insurance companies, launched its latest campaign #FailProof Your Health, as part of its advocacy to create awareness on the prevention of lifestyle diseases or critical illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer, and protect oneself from its financial impact.

fb_img_1469548384771.jpg

Amor Balagtas

“Since we launched our first health campaign in 2014, there has been greater awareness in general for the need to live healthier lives and prepare financially for major health emergencies,” says Amor Balagtas, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer of AXA Philippines. “Now, we want to make health awareness more tangible for the common Filipino by developing this online quiz that gives them their Health Risk Score.”

“The quiz or calculator is absolutely free and can easily be accessed on our website (www.axa.com.ph/HealthRiskScore),” Balagtas explains. “While living a healthy lifestyle, such as eating properly or exercising regularly, lessens our risk of developing a critical illness, there are other factors that come into play that we have less control of, such as age, gender, heredity, and perhaps even external stress.”

“By knowing their Health Risk Score, we give Filipinos a chance to know their baseline health condition, so that they can find concrete ways to make themselves healthier and avoid suffering from heart attack, stroke, or cancer,” she said.

Health Partners

In the past few years, AXA has partnered with several private, government, and non-government organizations (NGO) to promote health prevention and protection. These include the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Cancer Society (PCS), Philippine Heart Association (PHA) Manila Doctors Hospital, and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

AXA has also been a strong supporter of Senate Bill 3016 (a.k.a the Samboy Lim bill) that requires mandatory Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for students before graduation. AXA also recently participated in a nationwide mass CPR training led by the Philippine Heart Association which was conducted simultaneously in over 50 sites around the country, with over 300,000 participants.

Moreover, the company has conducted hundreds of “AXA Health Day” sessions the past two years in various AXA, Metrobank, and PSBank branches nationwide. These sessions include free blood pressure and blood sugar monitoring, as well as the measurement of Body Fat Percentage, Body Mass Index (BMI), and Waist-to-Hip (WHR) ratio, key health measures identified by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Health Ambassadors

Supporting AXA’s health campaign are two social media personalities — James Deakin and Erika Flores-Reyes more popularly known to her followers as “RikiFlo.” Deakin is an award-winning multimedia motoring journalist, TV host, freelance writer, blogger, and columnist, who recently shared about his shock when he found out that his mother and tita were both diagnosed with cancer at the same time. As a show of support, Deakin, a known car enthusiast, had his car painted bright pink which he says “is the official color for breast cancer.” His post has since gone viral, and has helped create awareness for breast cancer screening. His car, which he has now fondly named “Pink Panther,” has gone the rounds around the metro with the names and signatures of hundreds of people written on the surface of the car, as a sign of support and solidarity against cancer.

On the other hand, Erika Reyes, better known by her stage name “Riki Flo” is a popular radio DJ, sports broadcaster, and event host who has been a strong advocate against cancer for several years. Riki Flo is a firm believer that healthy living is important, and that certain lifestyle shifts are needed to avoid contracting illnesses.

In its previous health campaign, AXA asked celebrity mom Camille Prats to share her personal experience dealing with throat cancer that claimed the life of her husband Anthony Linsangan who was only 31 years old, just a few years after their wedding.

New Health Products

Part of AXA’s health campaign is the introduction of new and innovative health products or health solutions in the market.

“We just recently launched three new products to boost our health offer in the market,” Balagtas adds. “We have Life Basix Plus and Axelerator Plus which are both all-in-one ‘investment-health-and-life insurance’ product bundles. We also introduced Global Health Access, a worldwide comprehensive health coverage plan, which allows consumers to avail the best healthcare anywhere in the Philippines or abroad.”

The three new products add to the extensive health portfolio of AXA Philippines, which include Health Max, Health Exentials, and SME Employee Protexion, all of which were launched successfully in 2014.

“With our current mix of health solutions, we ensure that we have a product or solution that is right for you,” concludes Balagtas. “We want every Filipino to not only live a healthier lifestyle, but to also get the proper health coverage. That is why we want to tell every Filipino to #FailProof Your Health.”

ADIDAS SHOWS THAT CREATIVITY IS WHAT DEFINES ATHLETES IN NEW GLOBAL CAMPAIGN

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Adidas has premiered a new series of films kicking off the brand’s Sport16 initiative, underlining Adidas’ leadership and passion for sports.

The first chapter of films, “I’m Here to Create,” is told through a female athlete’s lens and stars global tennis icon Caroline Wozniacki, WNBA All-Star Candace Parker, supermodel/entrepreneur Karlie Kloss, tennis star Ana Ivanović, soccer prodigy Morgan Brian, DJ Hannah Bronfman, street athlete Robin Arzon and fitness artist Nicole Winhoffer, among others.

“Who I am is not defined solely by what I achieve on the tennis court,” said Wozniacki. “My passions and creativity off the court inspire me to be a better athlete and this film series brings together everything that makes me uniquely me. It is exciting and inspiring to be part of a larger group of women who share this same creative mindset.”

The “I’m Here to Create” film series, created in partnership with 72andSunny, brings to life authentic stories of real female athletes, who show the world the numerous ways in which they embrace creativity to tackle challenges, defy conventions, express themselves and fuel experimentation all in the name of sport.

Wozniacki’s film highlights how her unconventional forms of training fuel her game on the court while Parker’s story centers on her redefinition of motherhood. Bronfman explores her continuous path of reinvention to create the unexpected, Arzon has reinvented herself through sport after an almost near- death experience and Winhoffer re-shapes traditional workout routines to engage broader audiences in sports.

Through “I’m Here to Create,” Adidas will empower athletes across the world to declare how they bring creativity to sport and to celebrate those in their life who have inspired them to push beyond the norm.

“We remain relentless and loud in our pursuit of being the world’s best sports brand,” said Lia Vakoutis, Adidas’ Senior Director of Global Communications. 2015 was about challenging athletes to create their own game while 2016 focuses on owning creativity in sports. The ‘I’m Here to Create’ films engage athletes’ imaginations to use creativity to push their own athletic and personal boundaries. We will continue to celebrate athletes and influencers who reshape traditional views of sport through creativity this year.”

The new film series is an extension of Adidas’ three year brand plan that kicked off in 2015. “I’m Here to Create” features 15 and 30-second spots for each athlete that debuted online today and will air globally in more than 50 countries during key moments including UEFA Champions League, The GRAMMYs, the BRIT Awards and the Oscars, among others.

“We are obsessed with the versatile female athlete – women who love sports, make decisions every day to live an active life and are helping to change sports around the world,” said Nicole Vollebregt, Adidas’ Head of Women’s. “This year, we will consistently roll out women-focused activations, partnerships, products and events that will allow us to further connect with this athlete on a personal level.”

The “I’m Here to Create” film series builds on Adidas’ momentum across sport and style. Starting the new year, adidas launched the world’s first high performance laceless soccer cleat, the ACE16+ Purecontrol and last week, the brand unveiled the Pure BOOST X running shoe, built specifically for women and featuring a first of its kind floating arch. Over the next month, fans will see the best of Adidas on the world’s biggest stages, including Super Bowl 50, UEFA Champions League, New York Fashion Week, NBA All-Star Weekend, The GRAMMYs and the NFL Combine.
