“Masaya kami kasi ang 7-Eleven ay walang sawa na pinadadala kami sa ganitong international race.” said Lany Cardona who together with Rafael Pescos were given a slot to race in the Shonan International Marathon happening on December in Kanagawa, Japan with all expenses paid, as part of their prize for winning in the 42km category of this race.

Nine Filipino runners participated in this morning’s race, four of them in the full marathon while five in the half-marathon – a fulfillment of the commitment given by Philippine Seven Corporation (7-Eleven Philippines) to the top 3 (male and female) marathon and full marathon winners of the 7-Eleven Run that was held in the Filinvest City, Alabang last February.

According to Project Head Ms. Michelle Saludes, “We at 7-Eleven want to give Filipino runners not part of the Philippine Team the opportunity to showcase their abilities and be recognized in an international competition.”

Local and foreign participants coming from 50 countries, competed in the Da Nang International Marathon 2017 where the route brought the experience of running through Da Nang’s beautiful coastline passing the bridges across the poetic Han’s river in the middle of the city during sunrise.

This is the fifth year that 7-Eleven Philippines has brought Filipino runners to an international race giving them full support from taking care of all expenses, pocket money and with the help of sponsor Asics Tiger, a complete race suit.

“We will continue to encourage runners who aspire to represent the country in an international competition through the 7-Eleven Run Series which we are planning to expand by having another race in Cebu before the year ends and which will serve as a qualifying race to the 7-Eleven Run happening in Manila next year.” shared Mr. Jose Ang Jr., General Merchandise Division Head.

The participation of Filipino runners was made possible through the effort of Philippine Seven Corporation together with the support of sponsors Safeguard, Selecta Ice Cream, Pocari Sweat, Del Monte, Nature’s Spring, Summit Water, Dole Pineapple, Powerade, Solar Sports, CNN Philippines, Skyway, Filinvest and Asics.

Nike+ Run Club Manila (NRC) Celebrates Its First Anniversary

image

Nike+ Run Club (NRC) Manila, part of Nike’s largest and fastest growing global services platform for athletes, celebrates its first anniversary of bringing the best of Nike+ Running services and programs to athletes and runners of all levels.

“NRC connects runners of all levels to expert NRC coaches, pacers, training plans and NRC community members,” said Patrick Reyes, Country Marketing Manager, Nike Philippines. “The Nike+ Run Club Manila inspires and enables more runners to join the global running community, and is designed for first time runners, daily runners as well as race-day competitors.”

With over 13,000 runners who registered in its twice-weekly sessions, the NRC community continues to grow significantly. Led by NRC Coaches Ian Banzon, Rio dela Cruz, and Ico Ejercito, and supported by NRC Pacers, NRC sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday, 7:34 PM, in front of the Nike Park store in BGC.

Runners must register for NRC Manila sessions prior to each running session as there are capacity limitations. NRC Manila is open to both men and women. Runners can register online for NRC sessions at nike.com/manila.

The Nike+ Run Club Philosophy

  1. We are all meant to be runners. Running doesn’t turn away anyone at the door. If we want to bring out the runner inside us, we just have to lace up and get out
  2. We are not just runners. We are athletes. It takes more than a pair of legs to be fast. It takes our entire body, mind, and unbreakable spirit.
  3. Every run has a purpose. Some days we’ll feel pushed. Some days we’ll push back. Find the meaning in every mile.
  4. Respect every workout. Fear no workout. It’s going to be hard. That’s why we love it. Respect is earned from doing the work. So get out and get after it.
  5. Embrace your weaknesses. Then erase them. With regular and consistent work, our weaknesses can become our strengths.
  6. Measure success in as many ways as you can. Not every run will be our farthest or fastest, but every run is an achievement and should be seen as such.
  7. We believe in you, even if you don’t. On days when we feel less than our best, we can always seek motivation from our community. Nike+ Run Club is here to remind us that our best is always within our reach.

National Geographic celebrates 8 years of environmental advocacy with Earth Day Run 2017

photo new

National Geographic Channel in partnership with Cherifer Premium and World Wildlife Fun for Nature (WFF), marks its eighth year of raising the public’s consciousness about environmental issues, social awareness through health and fitness by staging Earth Day Run 2017 this coming April 23 with a hashtag #8withEDR.  This year’s event aims to continue the tradition of being one of the biggest running events in the country, expecting scores of running enthusiast and Eco Warriors to register and run for the environment.  The event will be held not only in Manila but simultaneously in the cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Taichung.

Earth Day Run 2017 in Manila will be held at the SM Mall of Asia grounds, where participants can join 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K categories. The event encourages and welcomes all types of Eco Warriors to take part, from fun-runners of all ages to the serious marathon runners who regularly compete. This year, Earth Day Run will also be sporting new features for its runners. As a special treat, all race kits will come with LED shoelaces, serving as a badge of pride and as a safety precaution for Eco Warriors running at night or before sunrise. Prizes will also be given to costumed runners who showcase their creativity by coming in their best ensemble made from recycled materials. Finally, to make each Eco Warrior’s voice heard in this run for the Earth, advocacy banners will be hanging above the finish line so that each runner can grab them as they cross to make a shout-out for the environment, keep as a souvenir, and use for all their post-run selfies to amplify the message of acting now to save the environment.

Nike Introduces Breaking2 – The quest to break the two-hour marathon barrier.

su17_rn_breaking2_hero_group_2_native_1600

Today Nike unveils Breaking2, an innovation moonshot designed to unlock human potential.

Like all daring dreams, Breaking2 has an audacious goal: Enable a sub two-hour marathon time.

Many consider this feat impossible. It requires reducing the current men’s world record time of 2:02:57 by three percent. However, that challenge is exactly what drives Nike; the impossible is an opportunity to envision the future of sport.

To help achieve a sub two-hour marathon, Nike is working with a diverse team of leaders across several fields of science and sport with a holistic approach to athletes, product, training, nutrition and environment.

Breaking2 provides an opportunity to explore whether the impossible is within reach. It is the ultimate embodiment of Nike’s mission: To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete on the planet.

THE MISSION

In 1954, Sir Roger Bannister ran the first four-minute mile. Bannister didn’t just break a record; he redefined what athletes were capable of and inspired confidence in others to do the same.

This great story reminds us that inspiration — complete belief in an impossible goal — is at the core of human potential. After all, as Bill Bowerman, Nike’s co-founder and legendary track coach, once said, “The real purpose of running isn’t to win a race, it’s to test the limits of the human heart.”

At its core, Breaking2 is about more than a marathon.

Attempting to break the sub two-hour marathon challenges the perception of what is possible in sport, resets the expectations of product and enables Nike to gather incredible athlete insight. These lessons can be applied across everything Nike does, including products and services, to ultimately serve all runners. The only real failure would be to not attempt such an audacious goal.

THE ATHLETES

Reaching a sub two-hour marathon requires shaving seven seconds off each of the 26.2 miles of the marathon. Even for the world’s best runners this is a massive leap.

Nike spent significant time identifying three elite athletes who are perfectly equipped for (and bold enough to take on) the challenge.

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea are all lined up to attempt the impossible and run a sub two-hour marathon. These runners are not afraid of the unknown — they attack it.

kipchoge

ELIUD KIPCHOGE

Eliud Kipchoge, 32 years old, was born November 5 in Kapsisiywa, Nandi District and has won medals at both the Olympic and World level. Eliud began running after high school following years of observing his coach and mentor, Patrick Sang, who is still his coach to date.

In 2003, Eliud made his debut in distance running after setting a world junior record in the 5000 meters at the IAAF World Cross Country Championship. Later that year, Eliud became World Champion at the World Championships in Athletics. In 2012, Eliud set a half-marathon best with a time of 59:25.

Eliud won a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics in 5000 meters, a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 5000 meters and most recently, a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the men’s marathon.

He improved his personal best marathon time by 5 seconds after winning the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:04:00. In 2016, he improved upon that time even further when he set a new course record in the London Marathon achieving a winning time of 2:03:05.

tadese

ZERSENAY TADESE

Zersenay Tadese, 34 years old, was born February 8 in Adi Bana, Eritrea. His bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics made him the first ever Eritrea Olympic medalist. He was also Eritrea’s first athlete to win a World Championship event when he took the 20-kilometer title in the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships.

Zersenay has four consecutive victories in the World Half Marathon Championships from 2006-2009 and won the title again in 2012. He set a world record in the 2010 Lisbon Half Marathon and has won gold, silver and two bronze medals at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Zersenay is a four-time Olympian competing at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

In 2009, Zersenay became the second man to win three World Championship medals over three different surfaces in the same year. Zersenay currently holds the men’s half marathon world record with a time of 58:23. His brother, Kidane Tadese, is also a professional distance runner.

desisa

LELISA DESISA

Lelisa Desisa, 26 years old, was born January 14 in Shewa, Ethiopia. Early in his running career, Lelisa focused on road racing. He made his breakthrough in 2010 after running sub-60 minutes placing third at the Zayed International Half Marathon. He has won many high-profile races such as Boilermaker 15K, Cherry Blossom 10-miler, Bolder Boulder 10K and Delhi Half Marathon.

Lelisa made his marathon debut by running 2:04:45 hours in the 2013 Dubai Marathon. Lelisa won the 2013 Boston Marathon and with the event of the bombings, he gave his medal back to the city of Boston to honor all the bombing victims. In 2015, he won the Boston Marathon again with a time of 2:09:17, and took second in 2016.
