Nike Hyperadapt 1.0 Manifests the Unimaginable

“Innovation at Nike is not about dreaming of tomorrow. It’s about accelerating toward it,” says Tinker Hatfield. “We’re able to anticipate the needs of athletes because we know them better than anybody. Sometimes, we deliver a reality before others have even begun to imagine it.”

Welcome the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, the first performance vehicle for Nike’s latest platform breakthrough, adaptive lacing. The shoe translates deep research in digital, electrical and mechanical engineering into a product designed for movement. It challenges traditional understanding of fit, proposing an ultimate solution to individual idiosyncrasies in lacing and tension preference.

Functional simplicity reduces a typical athlete concern, distraction. “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

For Hatfield, the innovation solves another enduring athlete-equipment quandary: the ability to make swift micro-adjustments. Undue pressure caused by tight tying and slippage resulting from loose laces are now relics of the past. Precise, consistent, personalized lockdown can now be manually adjusted on the fly. “That’s an important step, because feet undergo an incredible amount of stress during competition,” he says.

Beers began pondering the mechanics shortly after meeting Hatfield, who dreamed of making adaptive lacing a reality. He asked if she wanted to figure it out — not a replication of a preexisting idea but as “the first baby step to get to a more sophisticated place.” The project caught the attention of a third collaborator, NIKE, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker, who helped guide the design.

The process saw Beers brainstorming with a group of engineers intent on testing her theories. They first came up with a snowboard boot featuring an external generator. While far from the ideal, it was the first of a series of strides toward Beers and Hatfield’s original goal: to embed the technical components into such a small space that the design moves with the body and absorbs the same force the athlete is facing.

Through 2013, Hatfield and Beers spearheaded a number of new systems, a pool of prototypes and several trials, arriving at an underfoot-lacing mechanism. In April 2015, Beers was tasked with making a self-lacing Nike Mag to celebrate the icon’s true fictional release date of October 21. The final product quietly debuted Nike’s new adaptive technology. Shortly after, the completion of the more technical, sport version they’d originally conceived, the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, confirmed the strength of the apparatus.

“It’s a platform,” Beers says, “something that helps envision a world in which product changes as the athlete changes.”

The potential of adaptive lacing for the athlete is huge, Hatfield adds, as it would provide tailored-to-the-moment custom fit. “It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance.”

He concludes, “Wouldn’t it be great if a shoe, in the future, could sense when you needed to have it tighter or looser? Could it take you even tighter than you’d normally go if it senses you really need extra snugness in a quick maneuver? That’s where we’re headed. In the future, product will come alive.”

In short, the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is the first step into the future of adaptive performance. It’s currently manual (i.e., athlete controlled) but it makes feasible the once-fantastic concept of an automated, nearly symbiotic relationship between the foot and shoe.

The first generation of the HyperAdapt 1.0 will be available in the U.S. at select Nike retail locations. Appointments to experience and purchase the product begin November 28. Details on how to make an appointment will be announced in the coming weeks.

Under Armour, the global leader in innovative performance footwear, apparel and equipment has taken footwear innovation to the next level. In March, the Brand introduced its first-ever 3D printed performance trainer, the UA Architech. The UA Architech is a 360-degree performance training shoe that features a functional 3D printed midsole and 3D ClutchFit auxetic upper design that creates a “super-hybrid” trainer. This performance trainer provides athletes with the ultimate stability and cushioning to take on the most intense workouts, and it’s traveling all the way to Rio on the feet of elite swimmer, Michael Phelps.

In addition to the state-of-the-art technology and custom color design, Michael’s footwear features a personal touch to provide an additional source of motivation as he heads into competition. His 3-month old son, Boomer’s footprint is printed on the insole of the shoe as a personal reminder that Boomer is with him every step and stroke of the way.

With Boomer’s footprint, Michael Phelp’s 3-month old son, printed on the midsole.

The innovative 3D printed midsole of the UA Architech was combined with a flow-molded 3D ClutchFit auxetic upper to provide athletes with a shoe that not only gives a locked-in, supportive feel, but also flexes and moves with the foot to provide a zero distractions experience. Add in the Brand’s unparalleled Charged Cushioning underfoot for responsiveness and comfort, and a thin rubber outsole for traction and you have Under Armour’s most elite performance trainer.

A new color of the UA Architech will be available as a limited edition offering to consumers this August on UA.com. The shoe, which retails for $299.99, was the first 3D printed performance trainer available to consumers. The first color was available in March and sold out in under 20 minutes.

Nike LunarEpic Flyknit Enables Runners to #RunForever

The Nike LunarEpic Flyknit offers a virtually vanishing fit, fluid feel, and superior softness to help every runner push themselves to go beyond in every mile they take.

The LunarEpic Flyknit was conceptualized eighteen months ago when Nike’s running designers took insight and inspiration from the Nike Magista foot, ankle and lower leg to work together as a single unit to emphasize natural movement and fluidity; they set out to create a running shoe that imparted the same sensation while serving the runner’s key needs.

With a Flyknit-constructed upper for a locked-down fit and a Lunarlon midsole for lightweight cushioning, the LunarEpic Flyknit delivers a secure and smooth ride that will enable the wearer to #RunForever.  It is also incredibly versatile and is ideal for distance workouts, progression runs and recovery runs.

The LunarEpic Flyknit is now available in low version for women.  Both Mid and WMNA low versions are available at Nike Stadium, Glorietta 2 and Nike Park, Fort at Php 8,845 and Php 8,095 respectively.

Last June 30, I was invited at the launch of Nike LunarEpic Flyknit running shoes at Nike Park, Bonifacio High Street and I had a chance to try it at the Nike+ Run Club (NRC) Manila for 5 kilometers.  That is my first time to run with Nike LunarEpic Flyknit running shoes and my first time to use Nike running shoes and here is my review:

I find the cushioning same as my usual running shoes, lightweight and comfortable.  The uppers are soft and breathable which I always wanted in a running shoe.  It has enough ankle support.  Upon running 5k that night, I didn’t feel anything off that I mostly experience when I am trying out new shoes that don’t get well with my feet; no arch pain, no heel pain and no numbness in my 4th and 5th toes.  I think they jive with my feet though I still have to try it out on longer distances.  I still have to check it’s durability during longer distances like 21k and 42k.  I still have to test it under the rain; do they soak and feel heavy if they get wet and got blisters?  Do they still feel lightweight and cushiony at 32-km and above running?  Nonetheless, I enjoy running with them.  I will update you for my next running adventure with the new Nike Lunar Epic Flyknit running shoes.

Under Armour unveils brand house in Cebu

Performance footwear, sports gear and apparel innovator Under Armour (UA) continues to expand its reach in the Philippines with the opening of a brand house in Cebu City on May 22.

The first in southern Philippines, the 164 square-meter UA brand house is conveniently located on the ground level of Ayala Center Cebu.  This ups the number of exclusive UA outlets in the Philippines to four, further underscoring the importance of the country as growth area for the Baltimore-headquartered firm.  Customers can browse and purchase a range of innovative, quality merchandise the company has been famous for since its inception 20 years ago.

“We are extremely grateful for, and humbled by, the incredibly warm reception from our Filipino customers.  We believe that UA’s success is a direct offshoot of the worldwide trend toward an active lifestyle, and how the brand values reflected in our products have successfully promoted such,” said Triple Pte. Ltd. CEO Michael Binger.  The company holds the exclusive distribution rights for UA across Southeast Asia.  “During his visit to the Philippines, UA founder, chairman, CEO Kevin Plank had described Asia Pacific as one of the linchpins for truly defining UA as global brand.  indeed, our upward business trajectory here exemplifies that, and increasing our presence should further enable it,” he added.

Highlighting the opening of UA’s new brand house is the Armour Challenge – open to male and female participants, aged 18 years old and above on a first-come-first-served basis.  The competition, to be held at the Ayala Center Cebu’s Activity Center, consists of three physical challenges:  mountain climbers, squats, and burpees.  The fastest to complete the exercises will win a UA tank or sleeveless top and a discount coupon.  All other participants automatically receive discount coupons as well.  Famous husband- and-wife fitness coaches and UA brand ambassador Jim and Toni Saret will be on hand to give valuable fitness and training advice to participants and the general public.  A former national athlete, Jim was educated here and in the US on sports science and is the founder and training director of APEX (Athletic Performance Enhancement) Sports Training Inc.  Like Toni, he was one of the trainers in the Biggest Loser Philippines television program.  The two presently host MetaBEATS, a fitness show on the Lifestyle Channel.

– When heat rises, so can performance with Adidas CLIMACHILL

– The revolutionary cooling range returns in 2016 with new advances in cooling technology

– For the first time, the range comes with sport and gender specific design, with the women’s range built around the unique requirements of a woman’s body

CLIMACHILL is back for its 3rd successive season, once again re-defining cooling apparel innovation with new and more advanced technologies and a unique sport and gender specific design. Destroy the heat this S/S 16.

As heat rises, challenges increase, and with adidas CLIMACHILL so does the determination to perform. Working closely with athletes around the world, it is clear that increased heat and humid weather makes training and competitive performance more difficult. When core body temperature exceeds 37 degrees Celsius, efficiencies decrease and athletes cannot perform at their peak capacity. That’s why the new adidas CLIMACHILL uses industry-leading technology to keep their body temperature at an optimum level and help them perform at their best, even in the hottest conditions.

The result of the adidas Futures Team working closely with leading athletes, and of extensive testing within the climate chamber of adidas’ research labs, the S/S16 collection is its most advanced cooling product range yet; offering an evolution of previous CLIMACHILL technologies to work with the body to maintain the optimal body temperature:

  • −  For the first time, the adidas CLIMACHILL women’s range has been given a unique construction to complement the unique requirements of a women’s body identified via the Futures team’s research. The result? A fit that is truly tailored to the female form and offers maximized cooling where needed the most.
  • −  Fabric weight and thickness that differs between sports to enhance performance functionality depending on an athlete’s needs.
  • −  A uniquely engineered design profile includes industry-leading 3D aluminium- cooling spheres strategically located on the back and neck to correspond with the warmest areas of the body; providing an instant cooling sensation on contact.
  • −  Mesh-like micro fibres transport excess moisture away from your skin.
  • Revolutionary SubZero flat yarns contain titanium to maximize surface contact with the skin, to transfer heat away from the body.

Brie Felnagle, American middle distance runner said of the launch: “I know that to stay at the top my game, I need to train 365 days a year, and often in very hot climates as we travel the world. My competitors don’t stop when the temperature rises, so neither will I. That’s why I look to CLIMACHILL, it works as hard as I do to allow me to train, regardless of the temperature.”

Jason Richardson, American hurdler and former World Champion said: “For me, a race doesn’t begin at the start line, it starts when I first step out to train, with every session helping me to cut off vital milliseconds. Armed with adidas CLIMACHILL I can push hard to perform all year round.”

Heike Leibl, VP Horizontal Concepts at adidas said of the launch: “At adidas we are constantly working with athletes to understand how we can enable them to achieve their best. Our athletes push themselves to the limit, and to keep up with them we also pursue our own PBs, making apparel that is more climate resistant, stylish and effective than everything that came before. We know that amateurs and professionals all over the world struggle with training and performing in extreme heat. With the CLIMACHILL range we have produced a technology that is unparalleled in the way it addresses overheating in athletes, allowing them to keep up their training and performance, regardless of the heat.”

My verdict

As I do extensive spinning for 30 minutes at the Ride Revolution class, I find it so comfortable.  It’s light and cool; but I am not yet convinced, so I test it for long run.  I ran 18 km for 2 hours.  Despite of the humidity, very hot weather and vehicle fumes, it still keeps me cool.  I was profusely sweating then but my CLIMACHILL tank doesn’t cling my body, making it more comfortable even when I poured water in my head and body which I usually do during my races and long runs.  I still look decent (you know what I mean) after a 2-hour run.  My friends know me that I am not really into pink workout clothes (all my running gears, except for my team shirts and trisuit are all black) but only Adidas can make me wear pink!  I find the CLIMACHILL color line-ups so dainty and sweet, it doesn’t make me trying hard to be young looking.  So my verdict…  I AM LOVING MY ADIDAS CLIMACHILL.

It also comes with cute pair of CLIMACHILL shorts

The collection, which comes in a bold new Brazilian pack range of colors, on trend for the summer of sport ahead, is part of the new Adidas CLIMAZONE concept launched in 2016. Developed for those who are ‘Not Made For Normal’, Adidas, has created a unified product concept that can address specific seasonal weather issues to enable elevated performance in unrelenting conditions.

Adidas CLIMA is made up of three product ranges, each designed to provide athletes complete protection from the elements:

  • −  CLIMACHILL to control temperature in hot conditions,
  • −  CLIMAHEAT to retain body heat when the weather gets cold
  • −  CLIMAPROOF to repel wind, rain and snow
Each of the ranges, including adidas CLIMACHILL, can be purchased in special CLIMAZONE areas in select adidas stores across the world and at adidas.com/climazone. The adidas CLIMACHILL SS16 range launches on 23rd March with new product lines of the CLIMAPROOF and CLIMAHEAT collections to follow in the fall/winter.

The spring/summer Climachill range including training and running: t-shirts, tanks, shorts, tights and footwear is available at adidas.com and in selected retailers world/nationwide.

CoolSwitch Technology

CoolSwitch does exactly what its name states – it cools your body and skin when you start to heat up and sweat. The technology blends three unique active cooling agents, integrated for the first time ever in an apparel application, with each of these ingredients delivering a specific benefit over the course of a workout to help athletes stay cool.

The first ingredient serves to pull heat energy away from the skin, providing an instant cooling sensation, while the second is activated by sweat – as an athlete begins to sweat, it kicks in to supercharge the body’s natural cooling mechanism. On top of aesthetics purposes, the ‘crystal’ print that characterises CoolSwitch apparel also plays a functional role. The final ingredient is the same technology of that used in NASA spacesuits. In the process of changing phases from solid to liquid, this special material absorbs and stores heat energy within the binding agents in the ‘crystal’ print.

While each ingredient performs a specific function, it is the unique combination of these active ingredients that gives rise to Under Armour CoolSwitch’s unprecedented active cooling capability.  As a result, during a workout, CoolSwitch wearers feel cooler, less physically taxed and their skin temperature stays lower, allowing them to exercise longer. With Under Armour’s CoolSwitch technology, it is a leap forward for athletes and fitness enthusiasts everywhere to maintain and further their fitness and wellness journey.
