During the awarding ceremony, emotions are elated. Parents and kids are rejoicing and all smile but one kid caught my attention. He was Jearico Nunez, a boy from University of Perpetual Help System Dalta. He was called at the 8th place and as he rise to the stage, he was crying all throughout the ceremony.
Jericho is turning 14 years old this coming July. He resides from Cavite, member of an ordinary family, but because of his exemplary basketball skills, he became UPHSD’s basketball player. His NBA idol is Lebron James and dream to become a PBA cager in the future. As we talked to him, I find him so humble and respectful. We asked him why he was crying. He answered “Hindi ko po kasi akalain na papasok ako. Ang pangit po kasi ng performance ko today. Saka po ang yung mga kasama ko po sikat at galing sa magandang school… ako po simple lang, company worker lang po magulang ko.” I asked him if it is his first time to join Jr. NBA and he said yes. A co-writer told him “Alam mo ba si Kai third time nya na ito bago sya makuha. Ikaw, first time mo lang. So mas magaling ka sa kanya.” He just smiled. He is so humble, simple and naive. He didn’t know that he was on a top 3. He didn’t even know that the one who eyed him and approached him to give some advice and praised is none other than former Alaska PBA Star, Jojo Lastimosa. Maybe JoLas saw him what I saw since the training camp. I saw his perseverance and his heart. The heart of a basketball star! Watch for him. He may make it to the PBA.

The PERSEVERANCE of FIGHTER…
And the NEVER SAY DIE ATTITUDE of a WINNER.

Alaska IronKids Philippines is an annual sporting event that aims to promote the healthy and active lifestyle among children through the winning combination of proper nutrition and physical activity. The Alaska IronKids Race Series is just one of many sports development programs that Alaska conducts yearly to engage children to come out and play.
Pioneering athletic programs like the Alaska IronKids Philippines Triathlon has managed to take children away from their video game consoles, cellphones and cable TV remotes and out into the sun to swim, bike and run in triathlon races. Alaska’s sports programs hope to encourage children to get into organized sports while learning positive values like hard work, discipline, determination and teamwork.
Last March 5, 2016 at Subic Bay Alaska Ironkids Triathlon series was held. Children ages 6-14 years old compete with different categories (6-8 years old, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old, and 13-14 years old).
I was amazed with the kids’ strength and will power. As young as 6 years old, they already have a heart of an athlete with strong will and perseverance. And if you can see the older categories, they are HARDCORE!

The event was not only showcasing the kids talent and endurance but also showing how family ties grows more.
The best moment I observed is when the kids do their best because their parents give all the best support that they can give. The moment when the a kid reaches the finish line with a happy heart and her mother run towards the kid, hug and hold him and saying “Anak ko ito… ang galing mo… I’m so proud of you”. That moment is SO PRECIOUS… SO PRICELESS!
Highlight of the events:
Once again, the Borlain sisters ruled the Ironkids with Samantha first place at age 13-14 years old category, Tara first place at 11-12 years old category and Chezka is also first place at 6-8 years old categories.

You can see the eagerness of each player, their perseverance despite of some falls, tumbles and injuries. You can see a fighter in them – never give up.
